Afraid of Google ?
I’ve recently read at comScore a note where it’s stated that the Search Engine market share for Google in USA is about 60% … I find it really interesting, because at Spain I guess it may reach a 95% easily.
When I started using Internet, there was not web, neither has the HTTP protocol been developed. I remember having IP addresses kept in a paper notebook with some FTP’s and some servers that I wanted to know about (which I accessed from the University Unix or VAX machines). Then it came Mosaic, Netscape, Internet Explorer and it all exploded with InfoVia (a country wide ultra expensive modem Internet connection provided by Telefonica) and the Universities Internet access. You may bet I stayed by long time periods at the University computers room.
By then I remember using Altavista as my primary Seach Engine, and it worked very well (as well os other like Yahoo!, Lycos, Webcrawler, …). Then it came Google and I loved its simple homepage: that was the main reason that lead me to use it on a daily basis, not especially the quality of its searches (at least by then). I don’t know how much people jumped to Google by this same reason, but if using a modem, loading Yahoo!, Altavista or another pages was slow compared to Google.
Then I was used to it, and I suppose that it started to show the best search results too, so I never looked back. Nowadays, I am thrilled by Google. It has become a really big monster and it is extending itself for a lot of markets different from strictly the searching one. How much time would Google (or any other company) be able to offer such a lot of its services free of charge ?
Was it out there another simple and effective searching engine I wouldn’t mind changing again, since some choice is always good and I’m afraid of the power that Google is achieving. I wonder why do I use GMail accounts at all …
